Windows 7 SKUs: Worse Than Vista!

3 February 2009 5,240 Views 7 Comments

Reading Engadget recently I noticed that Microsoft finalized the Windows 7 SKUs (or Versions). I read further, despite reading the title which pretty much gives away the article. Vista had 4 primary versions and now it looks like Windows 7 will get even worse and have 6! I don’t understand what Microsoft is trying to accomplish? These versions are just confusing to customers. Instead, they should sell one dvd with all of the versions and then allow the user to pick at time of installation. Of course, the user would be assisted by a system test to see what it could handle, but still that would be a lot easier. If they didn’t want 1 “super dvd” they could do 2 I guess like with XP.

The proposed versions:

  • Windows 7 Starter
  • Windows 7 Home Basic
  • Windows 7 Home Premium
  • Windows 7 Professional
  • Windows 7 Enterprise
  • Windows 7 Ultimate

(read more about versions here)

People and especially companies are not going to like all of the choices and it is just going to hurt Microsoft more in the long run, just like Vista. Even if Windows 7 is awesome out of the box, Microsoft isn’t going to be able to get people the box in the first spot. Companies/Engineers are constantly choosing between options and simplicity and most (including me) offer two versions, Basic and Advanced. But Microsoft took this one step further and I don’t think it will help them at all!

Update: CrunchGear has posted their story about the recent news: Simplify (much like my view on it).

Just my opinion. Share below!

Well whatever works for them… wow they seriously need to just make one version and sell that instead of different versions.

Your Engadget link has a typo in it and leads to one of those crooked, place-holding ‘search’ pages.

I have to completely agree with you here. I’m a MFB (Mac Fan Boy) but it’s not because I believe the MacOS is better or because I’m too ‘cool’ for Windows. In fact I run multiple Windows XP machines in my office as well as the Mac so what’s the difference?

When I buy a Mac, I get one OS. If I want extras, I buy them a-la-carte and spend extra for the privilege.

When I buy a PC, I have no idea what to do. I end up getting the top of the line OS simply so that I have what I need later on but I pay an extra amount to do it and I end up feeling ripped off … so instead, I buy a-la-carte from the apple menu.

Yes, I’m not a big fan of Mac, but yes, their way of selling is much better. I understand how the OS Versions’ break down, but personally I think its really stupid and the average person wouldn’t understand it at all! However, maybe this is Microsoft’s plan, people will buy the wrong thing and end up buying another version or everyone will just buy the Ultimate or Professional version even though they don’t need it. Either way, Microsoft makes money!

Why 6 versions?  Why?!?!  Just make it simple and release one version!  Stupid Micro$oft!

Just wanted to mention, me being a computer geek (I’m head of computers @ Dijonaire Mustard!!!) that Windows Vista ALSO had an Enterprise and Starter. Starter came with all computers when Vista FIRST came out and Enterprise is only for business workers. Win 7 Pro replaces Vista Business. So, technically the same.
